Assessing Habitat Availability in a Hydrodynamic Reservoir System

چکیده
Habitats may become unavailable to fish in reservoirs at different water elevations. Coves are particularly vulnerable habitat loss, as these peripheral zones isolated from the main reservoir. Quantifying loss elevation reductions and estimating cost of replacing specific types or maintaining a target percentage total cover can help fisheries managers plan for restoration projects reservoirs. We used side-scan sonar estimate areas rock, tree, brush one cove within Harlan County Reservoir, Nebraska, quotes materials, placement, personnel recent replacement maintenance costs. Materials included riprap cedar trees, those needed construct Georgia cubes. Overall, brush, trees covered 2% conservation pool. Rock 10 times more area than 100 trees. All habitats became when decreased by 3.5–4.0 m. The replace each type increased decreased, all 3.5 m was US$390,000. maintain original available (2% area) but only until 2.5 At this point, similar coverage $219,000. Climatic variability lead greater oscillations elevations reservoirs, making vertical distribution even relevant management planning. findings study serve an example how identify costs restorations.

متن کاملProblems of Identification of Hydrodynamic Models in Reservoir Engineering
The need for solving the problem of identification of basic parameters (permeability coefficients, initial and boundary conditions) for hydrodynamic models of reservoirs on retrospective data arises from incompleteness and observational errors in source and current information about controlled object at all stages of reservoir engineering. Iterative methods for simultaneous solving of direct an...
متن کاملHabitat, not resource availability, limits consumer production in lake ecosystems
Food web productivity in lakes can be limited by dissolved organic carbon (DOC), which reduces fish production by limiting the abundance of their zoobenthic prey. We demonstrate that in a set of 10 small, north temperate lakes spanning a wide DOC gradient, these negative effects of high DOC concentrations on zoobenthos production are driven primarily by availability of warm, well-oxygenated hab...
متن کاملNeural Network Approximation of a Hydrodynamic Model in Optimizing Reservoir Operation
An approach of models approximation, applicable in the model-based optimization of water resources, is described. It was applied to the optimization of a system of the three reservoirs located in the Apure river basin in Venezuela. Its development plan requires to increase the period when the river is navigable along the certain reach. The problem was posed as a multi-criterial decision making ...
